PC2HRH Princess Christian was the third daughter and fifth child of Queen Victoria and was born on May 25th, 1846.  She had a strong interest in nursing, translation (especially German to English) as well as writing.  She became President of the British Nurses’ Association upon its foundation in 1887 and laid the foundation stone and bestowed her name on the first Home for the Aged Poor, now Princess Christian Home, on 24 September 1904 which started off as a soup kitchen.

Princess Christian’s first son, Prince Christian Victor died of enteric fever, while serving with the British Army during the Boer War on October 29th, 1900.  He was laid to rest on November 1st, 1900 in the Pretoria cemetery.  His grave is marked with a granite cross and a cast iron railing.  During his service, he received various medals of honour which include:  Ashanti Star 1896, Diamond Jubilee Medal, Indian Service Medal, Order of the Red Eagle (Prussia), Queens South Africa Medal and the Queens Sudan Medal.

Princess Christian Home is archive to various historic letters, minutes, news articles and old photos which reflect the compassion, love and warmth given to the Residents over the years. These also verify the former committees' and management's sensitivity towards adaptability, needs in the community as well as to address and respond to the dynamic environment during the past century.
